The Eurovision Song Contest 2009 was the 54th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Moscow, Russia. Forty-two countries participated in the contest. The stage was designed by New  York-based set designer John Casey and was based around the theme of contemporary Russian avant-garde.
Over 122 million viewers watched the show. The average audience share across all countries was 43,1%, compared to the normal Saturday night average of 18,4%. An increase in market share over 2008 figures was significant in various countries such as France, Estonia, and The Netherlands.
